So normally I’d say Pancham is JUST a panda, they could’ve done more of a gimmick to make it stand out, and then suggest something that I think would be cool looking. But you know what? Pancham’s gimmick is attitude. Look at that little motherfucker. Pancham isn’t just a stylized version of a real world panda, because real world pandas aren’t filled to the brim with sass.
My feelings for Gogoat are the same as for Skiddo. Great design, but could have emphasized its grass type more.
I’m noticing that on 6th gen Sugimori art, we’re getting a lot of well done anatomy. Skiddo and Gogoat’s legs are so beautifully drawn. Dem hooves. Pyroar was the same way, the body of the animal was just really well put together. The linework is fantastic. It really stands out to me, especially after 5th gen gave us nonsense like Liepard’s fat noodle legs and Samurott’s shoulder flippers.
SKIDDO IS GREAT. YES. I think Skiddo and Gogoat could’ve been more planty, but they still look good.
I want to like Florges but can’t. On the one hand I get what they’re going for with the flower thing, and the overall look is pretty neat. On the other hand, it’s Gardevoir with a giant rainbow afro. On the OTHER other hand, that’s hilarious. I don’t like how the giant flower puff is supposed to be a neck ruff, but wraps around the whole head, but DOESN’T actually reach Florges’s scalp, so it looks like a balding afro. Like a clown. Also it’s got tits and sticks its ass out.
It feels like they were trying to pull this design in two different directions.
Floette looks a heck of a lot better than Flabebe and I feel like this should’ve been the first stage in the line. It’s got a good balance of detail and its flower isn’t overwhelmingly huge. Not sure how those giant eyelash details are supposed to work though. If they’re antennae, they’re awfully close to the eyes.
Certain images don’t have .xcf files because I forgot to save them. But anyways, those of you who want to look at sloppily shaded layers, go ahead.
Something about Flabebe doesn’t feel like a Pokemon to me. Something about the style. I feel like this one would work better as maybe a Dragon Quest monster or something? Maybe Monster Rancher? That doesn’t make it bad though. Although it bugs me that its prop is larger than the living organism itself. I know that’s part of the gimmick though.
SUP if there’s anyone who is interested in .xcf files (that is GIMP’s file type) of the Quartz popkas say so now because I’m going to delete ‘em. I saved files with all the layers of shading etc. on the premise that I MIGHT need them someday but I’m pretty sure I never will. So if nobody asks for them by tomorrow I’m just getting rid of them. I’m trimming the excess on my bloated My Pictures folder.
Pyroar is actually really well done. The anatomy on these lions is great, and the fiery manes look good. I still feel like this wasn’t ENOUGH though. We need a little more gimmick. I could believe a creature that looks like Pyroar could exist in the real world. Pokemon should have a little something more to them, something fantastical. Maybe if the manes were literal fire? I guess that’s a bit of an overused idea though. Some people were hoping for a manticore Pokemon, that could’ve been cool.
